...and some feedback from Michael...

"I really enjoyed the course. I went to gain confidence in speaking in a group and to further develop my life skills. I got a lot out of it as I learnt how to set myself goals and how to carry on with them; it also gave me confidence to speak to new people. I achieved my goals I set on the course. I also got to watch some Blackpool reserve games (sneakily!) I recommend this course to people who suffer from depression, anxiety and other mental health issues."

AUGUST 23rd 2011 AND TWO TELLING PIECES OF FEEDBACK ABOUT THE BLOOMFIELD ROAD PROGRAMME...

Colin Hall, Blackpool's IAG Coach has provided two inspirational and moving pieces of feedback that have been passed to him. The first is from a Support Time and Recovery worker from the local Primary/Intermediate Mental Health Team...

Hi Colin,
I just wanted to let you know that I met the service user I referred to It's a Goal! last week, this is the first time I have seen him since he started the programme with you. I have to say that I cannot believe the change in this young man and I have been working with him for over two years. He is much more confident, he is going out independently, cooking meals for his family. He stated that he really enjoyed the course, he enjoyed planning his goals and achieving them, he has even made a friend during his time with you. I am looking forward to referring many more service users to It's a Goal! and seeing the difference in their lives also.
Many thanks,
Joan Fox

The second is a testimonial from John, a player who has just completed Season Two at Bloomfield Road...

Feelings Before...

Before It's a Goal! I had little to no confidence. I was not going out by myself at all, only to shops round the corner. I was not sleeping regularly; I was very nervous, anxious and felt anxiety because it was a new thing to do by myself. Stressed and scared feelings on the first attendance. Before I set off I felt anxious, scared of the place I was going. Getting in the taxi was ok when I arrived at the football ground, I felt mixed emotions, some good, some bad.

In the Room...

Colin met me outside with the other four players. When we got to the room we sat down. I felt very shy, nervous and a bit panicky.

My Confidence...

First session not so much change but after a few sessions, setting new goals, talking to Colin about It's a Goal! points i.e. the Wheel of Change - how to sort out different problems with my emotions and feelings - finding my position in the team which was goalkeeper because I try to keep things away from the goal, meaning not letting things get too close to me pushing people and problems away, trying not to think about my emotions. As the season went on I felt better in myself. My confidence grew very slowly and I felt able to put some of my points across without them feeling unwanted or not needed. The other players gave their opinions on what I said and did not put my ideas down. Towards the end of the season I felt better in myself. I think the weekly goals helped me more than I could believe, by going out by myself more and to different places that I didn't know. I started cooking for myself and others and started talking more openly to family members.

After the Course...

The course itself has changed most of my life. I have started making weekly goals, sometimes daily goals - small but not insignificant. I now plan days out with family and by myself more often. I am continuing to cook more for myself and other members of my family - but my sleeping has not improved. I did not want the course to end when it did and I enjoyed it very much.

MARCH 2011 - STEPHEN DALEY, CAPTAIN OF ENGLAND PARTIALLY SIGHTED FIRST TEAM, VISITS BLACKPOOL IT'S A GOAL!

For those who do not know him, Stephen Daley is a truly inspirational character who, in the face of adversity, has achieved much in his life and is continuing to do so. He is likely to receive eight more caps in the forthcoming World Cup making him the most capped England player of all time in front of David Beckham.
Stephen, who is partially sighted, visited Blackpool FC's It's a Goal! programme on March 6th where he gave an extremely powerful presentation of his life story to the IAG players at Bloomfield Road.
Stephen Daley was inducted into a new category established in 2007 with the Football Association to recignise the great achievements of the growing range of participants in football competitions for people with disabilities.
He is acknowledged as an inspiration for everyone playing football at all levels playing for Northern Ireland U14's as a promising left back and then for Glentoran up to the age of 16. He then had to stop playing football due to a marked reduction in his sight, and was released from Glentoran when he was 18. Determined to keep playing, he was then, at 19, selected to play for the England partially sighted team in his first European Championships in Barcelona.
At the age of 21 he was made captain of the England Partially Sighted Football Team. He has gone on to make 68 appearances for England (currently), 3 World Cups, 3 European Championships and has captained his country for more than 10 years. In 2001 he was named European Footballer of the year.
Following Stephen's motivational speech about overcoming difficulty and remaining positive, he and the IAG players embarked on a tour of Bloomfield Road.
Both coach Colin Hall and his It's a Goal! players said they all felt blessed by Stephen's visit as he showed what could be achieved with a positive outlook and attitude towards life.
