| IAG FC compete on foreign fields! |
|
Fabio Capello's men may not have managed to get to Austria, but IAG certainly did as they travelled to take part in the EASI Cup in Linz. The competition featured teams from Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Holland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Greece and England, and IAG's first fixture saw them up against a youthful and well drilled Hackney FC from London who were far too strong and ran out 5-0 winners. IAG responded well however and the next match saw them gain a creditable goalless draw against the Germans IWL Landsberg Lech. Finally the third encounter saw the Macclesfield side gain their first win with a 2-0 triumph over Grieskirchen United from Austria, Andy Mulley and Alan Pringle providing the goals. The results however saw IAG drop out of the "Champions League" section of the tournament by one goal, and play in the "UEFA Cup" division. Here they found themselves up against two strong German sides and Slough All Stars whom they had defeated in the previous years tournament in Manchester. The dangerous Regenbogen Munchen were despatched 2-0 thanks to a brace from Mulley, then Red Cross Kickers Plattling were defeated 2-1, Jerry Lakin and Brian Greatorex netting. Unfortunately it appeared that the side had peaked at this point, and their Berkshire rivals gained deserved revenge with a 2-1 win despite a long range thunderbolt from Jon Naylor. Now playing only for tournament position, the team started to run out of gas, losing to Grieskirchen 1-0, but rallied to earn a 1-1 draw against the Austrian side FC Steyr, Pringle the scorer. IAG's overall position in the tournament was 18th and with three wins, two draws and three defeats to their name, it was generally felt that the tournament had gone well. Most importantly everyone had thoroughly enjoyed themselves and had made relationships and rivalries that are sure to be opened up again next summer. See photos in the Picture Gallery section. |
