21st JUNE 2011 - It's a Goal! completes it's first season at Prenton Park and two of the team's players receive their Certificate of Achievement from Tranmere's Community Manager Steve Williams... ![]() Below is the press release sent out by NHS Wirral, the service commissioners... The end of the first exciting ‘It’s a Goal! programme, known as a ‘season’, was celebrated with four men referred to as ‘players’ being awarded a Certificate of Achievement for successfully completing the 11 week programme at Tranmere Rovers Football Club. ‘It’s a Goal! is primarily men aged 18 – 35 (though there is no upper age limit) experiencing anxiety, low self-esteem or mild/moderate depression. The peer group self-development programme draws on football metaphor and imagery to engage with men and help them to ‘open up’ in a friendly team based environment, to work towards achieving an important personal goal and enable them become ‘the best they can be’. One ‘match’ or session, lasting up to 2 hours, is held on Wednesday afternoon each week but no football is played. Though an interest in and knowledge of football is advantageous, people with no interest in the sport can be referred and some have been accepted on the programme., Paul, one of the players who completed season one at TRFC has no interest in football but that didn’t stop him coming along to each weekly match and take positive steps to improve his life. Tommy another satisfied player says “I have learned so much over the weeks I have been here and I have learned a lot about making decisions and working with a good bunch of lads i.e. our team. I would recommend it to anyone who decides to have a go at this course. It’s good stuff all round for your mind and your relationships.” Nacro – It’s a Goal! Coach, Kieran Hatton adds, “It’s great to observe the changes and improvements in the players each week as they apply the material covered on It’s a Goal! in their lives and look forward to meeting up with their team-mates for each match.” The scheme is commissioned by NHS Wirral and run by Crime Reduction Charity, Nacro with the support of Tranmere Rovers FC who provide the venue. The good news is that with increased demand for places on the programme in Wirral there is an additional season planned for Monday afternoons in the near future.
